The piece has no physical presence and will be “delivered directly from Beeple to the buyer, accompanied by a unique NFT encrypted with the artist’s unforgeable signature and uniquely identified on the blockchain,” Christie’s said.
NFTs have surged in popularity in recent months. The singer and visual artist Grimes sold $6 million worth of digital art last month, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is auctioning off his first tweet — a March 21, 2006, post that reads “just setting up my twttr” — as a nonfungible token. Bidding is currently at $2.5 million.
Noah Davis, a specialist in post-war and contemporary art for Christie’s, brought Beeple to the auction house’s attention after witnessing the graphic artist’s growing popularity.
“The first 10 minutes of this sale we had more than 100 bids placed. We went from an opening bid of $100 to more than $1 million.
So literally the thing closed Thursday morning. By Friday night at about midnight the transaction was literally 100% complete. (Metakovan) had the NFT, I had $55 million in Ethereum, which was immediately going up and down (in value).
(Beeple said he has converted all the cryptocurrency to cash and flashed his cryptocurrency app showing a balance of about $56 million — his take after Christie’s took its cut.) According to Christie’s this is something that usually takes like two months.
Q: There are so many NFT projects now. Are we in the midst of an NFT bubble?
A: There is definitely some froth.
There is absolutely, absolutely a lot of excitement.

A guide to NFTs: What are they, and why did someone spend $69 million for one?

Question: Why do you think your artwork “Everdays: The First 5,000 Days” fetched such a high price?
Answer: There are a couple of reasons. One, it represents 13 years of work. You can very easily see that this is something that took a very, very, very long time to make.
Another part of it is a lot of excitement around NFTs. The people in this space, the people who bid on them, I think they personally understand what NFTs are going to be much more than the rest than the general public.
The technology is simple enough that it can be used for many different things.

Buyers typically get limited rights to display the digital artwork they represent, but in many ways, they’re just buying bragging rights and an asset they may be able to resell later. The technology has absolutely exploded over the past few weeks — and Winkelmann, more than anyone else, has been at the forefront of its rapid rise.
“He showed us this collage, and that was my eureka moment when I knew this was going to be extremely important,” Noah Davis, a specialist in post-war and contemporary art at Christie’s, told The Verge.
“It was just so monumental and so indicative of what NFTs can do.”
A few factors explain why Beeple’s work has become so valuable. For one, he’s developed a large fan base, with around 2.5 million followers across social channels.
“NFTs” are based on so-called “blockchain” technology, which is also used by cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.
In 2017, together with his partner, who goes by the pseudonym Twobadour and whose identity is also a closely guarded secret, Metakovan created Metapurse, the main investment fund in “NFT” virtual objects, of which he is the main financier.
At the beginning of January, Metapurse announced it had acquired 20 virtual paintings from Beeple for a total of approximately $2.2 million (R33 million).
“When you think of high-valued NFTs, this one is going to be pretty hard to beat,” said Metakovan, in a statement released by Christie’s.
Beeple, which sold for $69.3 million (R1.4 billion), is a leading collector of new technologies who operates under the pseudonym Metakovan, the auction house Christie’s announced on Friday 12 March.
The sale of Everydays: the First 5,000 Days, a virtual mosaic created by Mike Winkelmann — the US artist’s real name — caused upheaval on the art market, where digital art was still a niche just six months ago.
Only two artists have achieved a higher price during their lifetimes in the history of the arts, the British painter David Hockney and the US visual artist Jeff Koons.
What is NFT and who is Metakovan?
The purchaser of the digital collage, Metakovan, is one of the oldest investors in “NFT,” or “Non-Fungible Tokens,” which are virtual objects like Everydays, whose authenticity and traceability are deemed to be inviolable.
Today, an NFT of his work sold for $69 million at Christie’s. The sale positions him “among the top three most valuable living artists,” according to the auction house.
The record-smashing NFT sale comes after months of increasingly valuable auctions.
In October, Winkelmann sold his first series of NFTs, with a pair going for $66,666.66 each. In December, he sold a series of works for $3.5 million total. And last month, one of the NFTs that originally sold for $66,666.66 was resold for $6.6 million.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are unique files that live on a blockchain and are able to verify ownership of a work of digital art.

XCOPY kullanıcı adlı sanatçı tarafından üretilen “Right-Click and Save As Guy”, NFT topluluğunda oldukça dikkat çekici bir satışa konu olmuştur.

But did note that was “really all-in since October” and acknowledged that it “has such a huge potential to be a very transformative technology.”
Breitbart News recently reported that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey successfully sold the world’s first-ever tweet for over $2.9 million as a non-fungible token (NFT). The tweet which reads “just setting up my twitter,” was written by Dorsey in March 2006 and was bought by Malaysia-based businessman Sina Estavi.
Estavi told the BBC that his purchase was the equivalent of “buying the Mona Lisa painting.” Estavi is the chief executive of the technology firm Bridge Oracle and bought the tweet via an auction on the platform Valuables using Ethereum, a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin.
