From the point of view of selling an artwork, artists need … it’s useful in the digital world to have the equivalent of making an item.”
Although this sale is the first time Berners-Lee has openly embraced the cryptocurrency community, the underlying technology has much that appeals about it, he said. Berners-Lee has settled on similar solutions in his own project, Solid, which aims to decentralise the web. “The blockchain world is pretty separate from the web, except where they connect in different places. But one of the problems with the web’s design is that it uses it uses domain names, which are at core a centralised system.
“Solid and the blockchain both attract people who want sovereign identity, sovereign power as a person. When you get a Solid pod, you can share it with anybody else in the world without asking anybody else, without going through any central authority.

He told FT that his initial vision for the web was a connection of personal pages, not directed by big business. “It was supposed to be individually empowering.”
He added that digital monopolies “automatically hamper innovation” and he sees will be a “huge backlash” from individual web users.
Berners-Lee is now the chief technology officer at Inrupt, which is in the early stages of planning its “first serious round” of fundraising, he told FT. Inrupt is using his Solid framework for the creation of commercial applications, some of which are being tested by the government in Flanders and the U.K. National Health System.
NFTs started taking off in March after digital artist Beeplesold an NFTpiece of artwork for $69 million and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet as an NFT for $2.9 million.
It will be the first time Berners-Lee has been able to capitalize financially on what is widely viewed as one of the greatest inventions of our time.
“Three decades ago, I created something which, with the subsequent help of a huge number of collaborators across the world, has been a powerful tool for humanity,” said Berners-Lee in a statement. “For me, the best bit about the web has been the spirit of collaboration. While I do not make predictions about the future, I sincerely hope its use, knowledge and potential will remain open and available to us all to continue to innovate, create and initiate the next technological transformation, that we cannot yet imagine.”
He added: “NFTs, be they artworks or a digital artefact like this, are the latest playful creations in this realm, and the most appropriate means of ownership that exists.

“Over the past several centuries humankind has seen a succession of paradigm shifts that have brought us forward into the modern era; Galileo’s proof of Heliocentricity, Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity to name but a few, but none has had the seismic impact on our daily lives as the creation of the World Wide Web.
I’m selling a picture that I made, with a Python program that I wrote myself, of what the source code would look like if it was stuck on the wall and signed by me.”
Berners-Lee invented the web in 1989 and before the NFT sale he said “The core codes and protocols on the web are royalty-free, just as they always have been.” A representative from Sotheby’s said the non-fungible token collectible art auction was historical and the fact that Berners-Lee verified the NFT makes it even more valuable.
“The symbolism, the history, the fact that they’re coming from the creator is what makes them valuable, and there are lots of people who collect things for exactly those reasons,” Cassandra Hatton, the global head of science and popular culture at Sotheby’s explained in a statement.
Several “CryptoPunks”, pixelated portraits that form one of the first series of NFTs, have sold for multimillion-dollar sums, the most recent going for a record $US11.8m in a Sotheby’s auction just last week.
However, NFT volumes fell month over month in April and again in May, according to Cryptoart, alongside a wider sell-off in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.
After artists including Damien Hirst and musicians such as Grimes have experimented with NFTs, Sotheby’s is presenting its auction of Berners-Lee’s code as among the first to offer crypto collectors a historical artefact. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sold his first tweet for $US2.9m in March.
In more traditional auctions, handwritten manuscripts by Alan Turing and Albert Einstein have sold for more than $US1m.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee himself, giving people the opportunity to reflect with Sir Tim on the bare bones of the architecture of the web’s creation. The sale will open from 23 – 30 June, with bidding starting at $1,000. The sale will benefit initiatives that Sir Tim and Lady Berners-Lee support.
It feels right to digitally sign my autograph on a completely digital artefact.” – Tim Berners-Lee
The NFT – completely unique on the Ethereum blockchain – is composed of four elements; the original time-stamped files containing the source code written by Sir Tim; an animated visualization of the code; a letter written by Sir Tim reflecting on the code and the process of creating it ; as well as a digital “poster” of the full code created by Sir Tim from the original files using Python including a graphic of his physical signature; all digitally signed.
In his own words, Sir Tim “picked that up and built a computer as quick as I could afford to, out of my pocket money.” Once he had graduated from Oxford University, he was involved in a rich variety of technical projects, during which there slowly formed the dream of a common information space in which everyone could communicate. This idea resulted in the creation of the first web browser and the first website. Sir Tim’s subsequent work to ensure the free use of the World Wide Web on a global scale is one of the greatest acts of philanthropy in recent history.
The “WorldWideWeb” application, was the first hypermedia browser, allowing users to create and navigate links between files across a network of computers.
They are the ideal way to package the origins behind the web.”
Cassandra Hatton, global head of science and popular culture at Sotheby’s, said in a statement that the “NFT format” will allow collectors to “own the ultimate digitally-born artefact.”
In March, South Carolina-based graphic designer Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, sold an NFT for a record $69 million at a Christie’s auction. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, sold his first tweet as an NFT for $2.9 million later that month.
On Thursday, a rare digital avatar known as a CryptoPunk sold at Sotheby’s for over $11.7 million.
And we do still, every now and again, have to fight to keep it free and open, fight for net neutrality and so on.”
Sotheby’s has not produced a sales estimate for the NFT, arguing that the token is a unique object unlike anything sold before. Bidding will open at $1,000 (£716), and the proceeds of the sale will benefit initiatives that Berners-Lee and his wife, Rosemary Leith, support, the auction house said, although the web creator would not be drawn on the specifics of those initiatives.
“I’ve always been interested in the digital world of whether we can use NFTs to get funding back to creative people like musicians and artists,” he said.
While I do not make predictions about the future, I sincerely hope its use, knowledge, and potential will remain open and available to us all to continue to innovate, create and initiate the next technological transformation that we cannot yet imagine. NFTs (non-fungible tokens) be they artworks or a digital artefact like this, are the latest playful creations in this realm and the most appropriate means of ownership that exists. They are the ideal way to package the origins behind the web.”
The proposed NFT is a single-edition collectable that will feature four separate digital artefacts, including the original time-stamped files containing the source code written in 1990 and 1991; an animated visualization of the code being written; a letter written by Berners-Lee; and a digital “poster” of the full code.
NFTs are becoming popular as mainstream today.
