System Overview: Ebb and flow systems, also known as flood and drain systems, are more complex than most of the systems here but offer distinct advantages.

12. Ebb and Flow (Also Called Flood and Drain)

Ebb and flow is a hydroponic system that uses a grow bed situated on top of a reservoir, and the two are connected via a set of pipes.

One pipe is connected to a water pump which periodically fills the grow bed with nutrient solution.
When the pump turns off, the second pipe drains the nutrient solution back into the reservoir to be re-used on the next cycle.

This system gives your plants a great balance of oxygen exposure, nutrients and moisture for fast, healthy growth.

But there are other advantages of hydroponic systems which make them ideal for home growers.

  • Next, insert the material into the hole in the lid.
  • It must be long enough to reach the bottom of the bottle and with at least an inch or two remaining in the top. Then:

    1. Remove the top of the bottle and pour the hydroponic nutrient solution into the bottom part. Refer to the mark you put on the side of the bottle.
    2. Reinsert the upper portion of the bottle into the bottom, enabling the wick to fall into the nutrient rich solution.
    3. Using the duct tape, secure the top of the bottle to the bottom.
    4. Moisten the perlite with the nutrient solution before placing it on the top of the bottle.
    5. String the wick through the perlite so that it can draw nutrients from the solution and into the perlite-filled top section.

    Then put a small seedling in the perlite.

    I’m looking forward to seeing how the plants will do in a horizontal system, since my only reference is to my vertical Zipgrow systems, which can prove troublesome in some plants. I expect a maturation time of 6-8 weeks for greens and herbs, and I can’t wait to see how a couple rows of strawberries will do in this situation.

    Basic directions – Use a 3 inch hole saw to cut holes in PVC sewer pipe at 5 or 6 inch intervals.

    Whichever way you select to plant your seedlings, make sure to check and trim the roots to prevent out of control growth that can clog the system.

    Another important consideration is the length of the grow tray. As the nutrient solution flows over the roots, and it decreases in nutrient concentration and oxygen levels.

    And “Short-run” trays offer an advantage over long ones as they ensure that plants at the end of the line receive a nutrient solution with the same composition as those at the beginning of the line. Long channels can be used successfully, make sure that you regularly check the nutrient levels and pH and replenish your solution.

    If you notice the plants at the end of the line growing slowly or not producing as much, consider switching to a short run system.
