The club members drank, competed in a Halloween costume contest, and took in performances from Beck, The Strokes, and Lil Baby — all brought together by a band of fictional apes that have become one of the hottest collectables in the world, virtual or otherwise.

Ape Fest 2021 was in essence a playground for the monied, natural given the spike in value for BAYC’s NFTS, but all parties involved in the Adidas collaboration say they want this project to help make the metaverse more inclusive and educate newcomers about how they can participate. Although initial prices for the tokens that’ll be minted with the Apes wearing co-branded apparel have yet to be set in stone, Nazlawy says the cost will be comparable to one of Adidas’ more luxury sneakers.

And with Bored Ape, we’ve really learned how incredible it is that technology has created a new context for what it means to belong to a community which can create value for its members.”

The community that Adidas is entering was shown in full force at the end of October, when members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club gathered in New York City for the weeklong Ape Fest 2021. At various parties in Manhattan and Brooklyn, BAYC owners showed up sporting masks of the Ape NFTs they call their own along with branded apparel that can only be purchased by holders of the tokens with a floor price that’s climbed to six figures.

Club NFT #8774 that it has named Indigo Herz and could be seen wearing an apparel with the brand’s logo. The revelation was completed with a video teaser of the collaboration between Yuga Labs, the creator of Bored Apes NFT, and the leading clothing firm.

Apart from its partnership with Yuga Labs, the firm is also partnering with other NFT-related projects like Gmoney, who is a renowned NFT collector, and Punk Comics, an NFT derivative project that was inspired by CryptoPunks.

The video trailer shows the alliance with its numerous partners as 3D avatars related to Gmoney alongside an original Punks Comic character plus its newly purchased Bored Ape NFT entering into a virtual world adorned with the Adidas logo.

While speaking on the partnership, a representative of Adidas disclosed in a Twitter Spaces conversation that the project took five months of meticulous planning.

Days after announcing a partnership with Coinbase and purchase of a plot of virtual land in The Sandbox, Adidas has shared details of its forthcoming collaboration with Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comic, and influential NFT collector gmoney.

News of the apparel brand’s pivot to Web3 first surfaced Sunday when Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comic, and gmoney all posted teasers hinting at a partnership. Speculation over the brand’s entry into the space grew through the week, before a series of digital Adidas items were unveiled via MetaHero, an NFT project from the team behind Punks Comic.

Now, Adidas has confirmed further details of its plans.

Dec. 14 to determine early access eligibility. If you don’t qualify for early access into the Adidas NFT event, don’t lose hope.

Although 20,000 of Adidas’ NFTs are reserved for early access sale participants, 9,620 NFTs will still be available for general sale. Adidas says that it will retain 380 NFTs to use for future events and will keep its sales channel open until all 9,620 NFTs are sold to the general public.

For instance out of 10,000 apes only 46 have solid gold fur, making these particularly valuable.

As noted, the “floor price” for the project — what you’ll pay for an ape with common traits — is $420,000 (145 ether). Apes with the golden fur trait are rare, and so sell for much more.
One sold in January for $1.3 million. Another with gold fur and laser eyes, two sub-1% traits, went for $3 million. (And both of those occured when the floor price was about half of what it is now.)

BAYC is the biggest NFT project of this kind, recently eclipsing CryptoPunks, which is credited as the first “pfp” (profile picture) collections. Other notable sets include CyberKongz, Doodles and Cool Cats.

What makes Bored Ape Yacht Club valuable?

This is a complicated question.

Earlier this week, Adidas hinted that it was getting into the metaverse. “Probably nothing,” tweeted the sportswear brand enigmatically when announcing a partnership with Coinbase. That nothing is now something, and that something looks like a partnership with one of the largest NFT brands around, the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

The BAYC Twitter account tweeted a picture of an ape sporting an Adidas hoodie.

On the hoodie are the logos of Adidas, the Bored Ape Yacht Club, G-Money and Punks Comic.

The picture is all there is to go on at the moment; think of it as a teaser for a yet-to-be-announced project. Perhaps limited edition BAYC NFTs or some BAYC-inspired Adidas clothing.
Decrypt has reached out to Adidas to confirm the partnership.

Of course, Adidas isn’t the first major company to hurry to join the Metaverse in recent weeks. In October, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would be rebranding to Meta, prompting a Metaverse frenzy across the cryptocurrency industry. KuCoin announced a $100 million Metaverse fund, while Solana Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and FTX also committed a nine-figure sum to a Web3 gaming fund. Games like Decentraland and The Sandbox also outperformed almost the entire market throughout November. Grayscale, meanwhile, published a report putting a $1 trillion target on the value of the Metaverse last week.

Bored Ape Yacht Club has benefited from the growing interest in the Metaverse, NFTs, and Web3. The value of Bored Ape NFTs has soared since the project launched in April, with the cheapest currently going for around $200,000 in Ethereum on the secondary market.

Independence is the name of the game, and jaw-dropping sales figures have shown that key creators can make a windfall all on their own.

Gmoney says he says no more often than not when he’s approached by brands because he doesn’t see any desire by them to push boundaries doing more than slapping a logo on some artwork. “One of the things that really attracted me to the team at Adidas was that they were willing to go on that journey,” he says. “They’re open to learning about how the community works, being like, “Okay, NFTS are not just art, they’re not just about collecting.’ I’m going to do very well on my own, but I want to be working with people that want to push the space forward as much as I do.”

Nazlawy teases that there will be more to come from Adidas in the metaverse and that it wants to work with the community to build with their vision in mind.

Meanwhile, Adidas rival Nike has been making slow and steady moves in the metaverse space. The Oregon-based company registered seven new trademarks linked to the commercialization of digital branded apparel, and it has established a Digital Product Creation Group.

These may be linked to its collaboration with online gaming platform Roblox for the Nikeland virtual world where users have to move in the real world to prompt their avatars to have super abilities in the game. For example, if a user goes for a run, the movement is logged and the avatar will be able to run at the speed of light. The platform is also full of Nike branded digital apparel for purchase.
